JUSTICE & SOCIAL SERVICES

NATIVE VILLAGE OF GOODNEWS BAY

Supporting the people of Goodnews Bay, Alaska through advocacy, protection, and compassionate care.

The Goodnews Bay Tribal Court is the judicial branch of our Tribe, with authority granted by the Constitution and Bylaws.

The Court ensures justice is carried out in accordance with tribal laws, values, and traditions. It also protects the rights of our tribal members.

The Court operates with fairness, impartiality, and respect – honoring traditional knowledge while applying modern judicial practices.

Purpose: A court-connected diversion program to address addiction and trauma through counseling, culturally grounded practices, and structured accountability – aligned with the Healing to Wellness model preferred by federal partners.

Eligibility & Referral: Priority is given to nonviolent offenders and community members referred by the Tribal Court or Traditional Village Council. Entry requires informed consent and a personalized healing plan.

Core Services: Trauma-informed individual and group counseling; culturally grounded healing circles; family engagement; sober support and peer mentorship; case management; and coordinated wraparound services such as housing, education, and employment support.

Social Services supports Tribal Members and families through prevention, intervention, and recovery services. We coordinate care and connect members to resources. We also advocate for safety, health, housing, education, employment, and cultural well-being.

Core principles: respect, confidentiality, trauma-informed care, cultural humility, and community partnership.

The Tribal Police Department currently has three officers who serve both as peacekeepers and as guardians of the community by enforcing tribal laws.

The Tribal police officers serve dual roles: enforcing law locally and serving as Customs and Village Boarder Protection officers. They enforce tribal law within the village and protect against illegal substances crossing the village border.

Their mission is more than enforcement. It is about honoring the Council’s authority, preserving the integrity of our lands, and protecting the well-being of our people for future generations.

Goodnews Bay Tribal Health Services is dedicated to supporting the wellness of our people through culturally respectful, community-driven care. We provide services that promote physical, mental, and spiritual health, focusing strongly on prevention, education, and resources access.

Mumtraq Regional Impact is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation established by the Tribe in 2024 that is dedicated to empowering the people of Goodnews Bay and beyond by building skills, creating opportunities, and strengthening our workforce.

Guided by the values of our ancestors, we invest in training, apprenticeships, and capacity-building that reflect the priorities of our community. We strive to walk together toward a stronger future where every individual has the tools to succeed, and our village thrives for generations to come.

We believe that a home is more than a shelter. It is the heart of our community.

Yute Calistait Tribal Contractors LLC was established by the Tribe in 2025 to remodel and build homes in the village and beyond.  We operate with respect for our land, people, and traditions. By walking in the ways of our ancestors, we create housing that reflects our values and protects and sustains our people for generations to come.

The Native Village of Goodnews Bay is committed to ensuring that every Tribal Member has access to healthy, reliable food resources.

Our Food Programs support families and elders by providing essential groceries, subsistence foods, and nutrition assistance throughout the year.

The Native Village of Goodnews Bay maintains essential transport infrastructure that supports daily life and community safety. With limited resources, the Tribe currently oversees maintenance of approximately 6 miles of gravel road and the village airstrip, ensuring access for vehicles, supply deliveries, and emergency services. Snow plowing and routine maintenance remain priorities, though this program operates with limited funding.

The Tribe is committed to expanding transportation services in Goodnews Bay, with future plans to secure air support and strengthen connections to regional hubs.

Building this program will not only improve mobility but also enhance access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities for Tribal members.
